On Friday, November 22, 2024, the Fine Arts Student Association (AKSEN) and the Anthropology Student Association (HIMANTARA) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) welcomed visiting students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UITM) Malaysia. This visit was conducted as a comparative study to exchange experiences and share stories about cross-cultural experiences.
Upon arriving at the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) UB building, the UITM students participated in a talk show as part of the 3-in-1 class program, facilitated by Dr. Badrul Isak. During the event, the UITM students presented a captivating traditional Malaysian dance that enthralled the entire audience.
Subsequently, on their way to the reception and discussion room, the Fine Arts students invited the UITM students to tour the studios at FIB UB. In the Graphic Studio, they observed a reproduction course where students were working on resin in the form of bowls. In the Sculpture Studio, they saw unique experimental sculptural works. Their interest peaked when they visited the Batik Studio, where the works of sixth-semester students received praise. They expressed their admiration for Indonesian batik, noting its unique characteristics in every region. The visit continued to the Painting Studio, where the UITM students witnessed firsthand the presentation of student works in the Pre-Final Project Painting course.
After completing the studio tour, the UITM students were invited to visit an Anthropology exhibition showcasing research results from slum areas. This exhibition provided fascinating insights into the research methods and approaches employed by HIMANTARA students.
The agenda continued with a discussion in the reception room. In this session, AKSEN, HIMANTARA, and the UITM students shared their experiences in community service and artistic activities at their respective institutions. The discussion was warm and enthusiastic.
This comparative study also marked the beginning of closer cooperation between the Department of Art and Cultural Anthropology of FIB UB and the Faculty of Art and Design Education of UITM Malaysia. In addition to discussing plans for cooperation in the coming year, this event also strengthened the bonds of friendship among the students. Although there were initial challenges due to differences in language, these did not hinder effective communication.
This meeting was a significant milestone in strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two institutions, as well as opening up opportunities for future collaborations.
