PORTRAIT OF PEACE: Retrospection

As an Painting Art Creation

By : Achmad Khoiru Atho’illah

Conflict or a social phenomenon where there is friction, opposition between individuals and groups from time to time often occurs. Conflicts are always based on differences of opinion, power, or ideology that are viewed negatively from the human side. A conflict is considered resolved by making peace between individuals or groups. Every human being always wants peace in the sense of freedom, welfare, happiness that includes human rights and resolving a problem. The importance of introducing peace values has been started for a long time by conveying messages and movements about peace in the world. The values of peace are conveyed by important figures so that they can trigger retrospection or recall the value of peace in resolving a conflict. One of the students from Universitas Brawijaya introduced the values of peace from certain figures through works of art. The student named Achmad Khoiru Atho’illah who lives in Batu city has an idea to raise the title “POTRETS OF PEACE FACTORS : Retrospection in the creation of painting” in his final project.

Achmad Khoiru Atho’illah or commonly called Atok is an artist who creates artworks based on the idea of social problems around him. Atok said that the idea for the creation of his final project arose when he saw many people or media talking about conflict issues, whether it was war or social conflict. His saturation with information on conflict issues stimulated an idea to introduce the value of peace from important figures in the past that are widely known. The idea is not merely to introduce the value of peace, but it is expected to trigger the media or society to introduce it as well.

The creation of Achmad Khoiru Atho’illah’s final project resulted in seven artworks in the form of portrait paintings of peace figures in the style of realism. Atok’s works use monochrome colors and tend to prioritize smiling facial expressions and writing elements around the portraits. The monochrome colors and writings are intended to give the impression and message that is past or retro according to the title raised. Atok also plays the phosphor light effect only on the line elements that form the writings, meaning that when it is dark, only the writings are lit. The writing represents that even though the figures of peace have passed away, the meaning of the value of peace that characterizes the figure should not disappear. Achmad Khoiru’s work is actually quite simple with portrait depiction, but do not look at the simplicity alone but the concept of message impression contained in his work.

Achmad Khoiru Atho’illah’s final project exhibition is expected to be a stimulus for the public and art lovers to prioritize peace values and always remember the messages and impressions of peace figures. The artworks created are also expected to be a new point of view to be a reference for art and provide criticism to the community or country in conflict.
