Exploring the Potential of Illustration Art in the Digital Age with Art Practitioners: Prof. Wu-Wei Chen from NYU Shanghai & Illustrator Karina Tungari in 3 in 1 Guest Lecture Activity
(28/02/2024) On October 18-20, 2023, Fine Arts FCS Universitas Brawijaya again featured a series of inspiring events by inviting leading art practitioners to share their experiences and knowledge in the field of fine arts in the 3 in 1 Guest Lecture Activity. Fine Arts FCS UB held a guest lecture that attracted the attention of Fine Arts Students, focusing on illustration art in the digital era.
In an online event, students from the Fine Art Study Program gathered to listen to a guest lecture from a renowned digital artist, Professor Wu-Wei Chen. Professor Chen, who hails from New York University (NYU) Shanghai, China brought his extensive experience in digital art, cultural history, and art education to the university stage.
In his lecture, Professor Chen discussed that in this digital age, visual artists have access to more sophisticated and innovative tools and mediums. With graphic design software, they are able to create more complex and realistic works by easily manipulating visual elements.
Not only that, digital technology also facilitates direct interaction between artists and audiences through social media and online platforms. This makes art globally accessible without geographical limitations, opening up new opportunities for artists to gain appreciation and exposure.
The Fine Arts students who attended the event were mesmerized by the insights shared by Professor Chen. They also engaged in a lively Q&A session, exchanging ideas and views on the future of illustration art in the digital age.
Not only inviting Professor Chen, Fine Arts FCS UB also invited a local art practitioner on October 20, 2023 to fill the 3 in 1 Guest Lecture Activity, Karina Tungari who has long been involved in digital illustration art. In her lecture, Karina explained that work opportunities as an illustrator abroad offer a broad platform for creative development and a wider professional reach.
Karina gave Fine Arts students an understanding that the creative industries in many developed countries are growing rapidly, creating a high demand for talented visual artists. Illustrators have the opportunity to work with international clients, bringing challenges that enrich the experience. Collaborations with design companies, book publishers, animation studios, advertising companies, or the film industry are some of the opportunities available.
This guest lecture event is also part of Brawijaya University’s efforts to continue providing diverse and relevant learning experiences for students. By inviting leading art practitioners such as Professors Wu-Wei Chen and Karina Tungari, the Fine Arts Program at FCS UB is committed to providing meaningful learning and preparing students to face future challenges in the global creative industry.
Thus, this guest lecture is not only an opportunity to listen to inspiring lectures, but also an important step in enriching the learning experience of Fine Arts Students at Universitas Brawijaya. Hopefully, with the passion and new knowledge gained, the students can continue to develop their talents and skills in illustration art, and become valuable contributors in the dynamic creative industry.
