Premiere exhibition location – Nuri Coffee & Eatery – Jl. Ade Irma Suryani, Kauman, Klojen, Kota Malang, Jawa Timur.
(Monday, 22/04/2024) On Sunday evening, April 14th, 2024, the inaugural event of the relay exhibition project scheduled to take place in three locations was held. The exhibition opening event went smoothly amidst the presence of art enthusiasts. This was evident from the insufficient seating provided, as art lovers filled the space, some even standing throughout the event. However, the community’s enthusiasm remained high as they eagerly awaited the artistic achievements of the participants of “Jumping Fence” whose works were displayed at Nuri Coffee & Eatery – Jl. Ade Irma Suryani, Kauman, Klojen, Malang City, East Java.
The Jumping Fence exhibition event was initiated and rolled out by the Gemah Ripah team to become an exhibition event that is not just a mere “display.” The phrase “not just a mere display” in this event implies an invitation to Jumping Fence participants to not only focus on enhancing the outer aspects of their artwork, especially not through rote memorization. The spirit intended to be ignited in this exhibition is – borrowing the term from Jacob Sumardjo (2017) – about reigniting the desire for curiosity. Sumardjo explains that curiosity is inherent in humans. Humans always doubt the truth that already exists after mastering the truth they have adhered to for so long. Humans want to be free to seek and find their own truth, which is a new truth based on their old truth.

With such underlying ideas and ignited spirits, Jumping Fence exhibition participants have engaged in creative contemplation. Of course, the interpretation of Jumping Fence becomes highly personal, biased, and introspective. What have I discovered in the presentation of artworks that have been exhibited or created? What creative locus forms the aesthetic paradigm for me over one, two, … decades of artistic endeavor? etc. Similar questions will serve as stimuli in building dialectics in each individual’s creative process.
Munir Kahar successfully gathered a total of 29 exhibition participants spanning across generations, especially artists from the professional realm who have been active in the art world for at least 3 – 4 decades, filling the space with “Salt.” In this exhibition, there are also 5 artworks displayed from 5 academic citizens of the Fine Arts Department, Brawijaya University. They consist of 4 students and 1 lecturer. The mentioned students are Afrizal Romadhoni, Hikmahtiar David, Yahya Syahendra, and Thariq Siraj Ramadhan. I Kadek Yudi Astawan himself is a representative lecturer whose works also participated in the subsequent relay exhibition, namely at Studio Kalahan – Yogyakarta from May 3rd to May 10th, 2024, and at Modus Locus Gallery, Minneapolis, United States as the closing event.

It should be noted that the artworks displayed in the Jumping Fence exhibition vary significantly in terms of ideas, medium exploration, and technical sophistication. However, it is important to emphasize, based on the opinions of some participants who were engaged in discussions, that not all artworks have reached the stage of ‘jumping the fence.’ Jumping over previous artistic habits, or the formulation of creative conventions that have been engaged with for a long time. Some have succeeded in shifting, but not necessarily jumping (?).
Despite these assumptions, it is important that assessment be open to all art enthusiasts with instruments and criteria that are accountable. The question of which artworks have truly “jumped” or merely shifted will remain within a multi-interpretative space. Morris Weits once concluded in his essay that art is too varied and complex to be condensed into a single definition!
