The World of Cats
As an Idea in Creating Paintings
By: Rozaana Afifah
Fanged and feathered. Sometimes growling or meowing coquettishly, depending on how much food is in the bowl. Funnily enough, many people recognize the magical power of this creature. With its soft, flowing fur, anyone can’t help but want to kiss it and bite a little on the cheek. Cats have always been pets that are loved by many people. Including Rozaana Afifah herself, the world of cats managed to fill her imagination room. She crystallized her love for cats through a well-prepared artistic process.
This solo exhibition titled “The World of Cats” presents bright dominant colors as well as lively fantasies from the perspective of a cat lover through seven acrylic paintings, with cats as the idea of creation. Through the works on display, the artist invites all who stop by to listen to him recite stories about the experience of caring for cats. Experience does not only come in sweet forms, as bitterness sometimes comes knocking at the door – joining the everyday.
The works on display are evidence of the turmoil during the artist’s care and encounters with cats in the neighborhood. There are joys and sorrows, of course. The boundary between the two he tries to show in the play of colors in each work. The out-of-the-box representation of how he creates his own world with his cats is fun to watch and guess with our own intuition. Growing empathy towards pets is a feeling that is expected to be nurtured when trying to explore each story behind the paintings of Rozaana, the artist in this exhibition.
Taking care of pets is not just about feeding and watering them, but how to make them believe that they are at “home”. This point of view has yet to reach some hearts. Rozaana tries to transmit this point of view through the works she has created. Expressing through work, making it meaningful.
