The Relationship Between Productivity and Slowness
The sluggish or relaxed attitude in our society often leaves negative criticism, especially if it is directly linked to the mental characteristics of Indonesians. Such an attitude to life was once strongly criticized with the term ‘relaxed culture’ by Sanento Yuliman in the January 29, 1975 edition of Kompas. In one of his accusations, this relaxed culture was assumed to refer to the long-entrenched relaxed lifestyle of the Indonesian people (the indigenous lifestyle).
The development of cynicism in the attitude of living casually, casually, casually is possible for many reasons. Forgetting to observe, people’s perceptions that have already been carried away, and an unwillingness to question and discover new realism or simply accept uncritically. Such situations and beliefs are interesting for the artist to shake through the work, because the artist’s background from childhood to adolescence often leaves an unfavorable impression on the environment around the artist and is carried over into adulthood.
The emergence of a satirical reality in the artist’s daily life became a stimulus to express the artist’s ideas in 7 paintings with the main character Sloth. In this final project exhibition, Sloth becomes the artist’s articulation of findings that are actually not new, but are intended to offer a new perspective on perceptions that have been believed to have lasted in society. That productivity is not always related to immediacy and speed.
