WOMEN’S BODY IMAGE
As an idea for painting art creation
By : Rosella Deby Permatasari
As time goes by, the role of social media seems to have become a lifestyle that cannot be separated from our daily lives. Whatever information we need can be easily found with just a click. Likewise, with the development of the fashion world, which is now growing rapidly with the emergence of the trend of influencers and beauty vloggers, women are flocking to follow and apply the trends that are skyrocketing on themselves and then post them on social media.
Recently, issues related to beauty standards have increased, especially among women, causing body image disorders among women, especially among adolescents who are in the process of finding their identity. Body image is a mental picture as a result of self-observation, both personal experience and other people’s judgments about height, weight, hair type, skin color, how we talk, how we get along, and how we can become an ideal self. Body image can be defined as a collection of an individual’s conscious or unconscious attitudes toward their body, including past or present perceptions of its size, function, appearance, and potential.
Insecurity or loss of self-confidence is one of the disorders that result when an individual fails to meet the standard of beauty or body image held by a group of other people. The number of likes on our photo posts on social media platforms can also be an indication of the value of our appearance being liked or justified by others. When more people justify our appearance, we are likely to feel hurt and even withdraw from social life.
Many teens do not really know themselves because they follow too many lifestyles or even look contrary to their own self-image. It seems that it is easier to follow the example than to create something that truly reflects our own identity, the shadow of fear of being considered different is also often a consideration for most women when determining their appearance, if not following the trend is the same as being outdated, but they forget that following a trend that does not necessarily suit them can also make others justify their appearance.
Through exhibition “Women’s Body Image”, which is visualized in the form of seven works in this art exhibition, I hope that the audience, especially us women, will look more into ourselves and be grateful for our body shape. Through this work, I also want to invite women to have a positive view of their body shape, as true beauty comes from a positive aura and our own good speech and behavior.
