On Sunday, May 17, Phetak Art Space in Junrejo, Batu City, was filled with stunning artworks from art students across East Java. The event, called “Final Countdown,” was organized by the Studio Dinding Luar (SDL) Community in collaboration with students from various universities, including Universitas Brawijaya, Sekolah Tinggi Kesenian Wilwatikta (Wilwatikta College of Arts), Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas Negeri Malang, and Universitas Adi Buana.
This exhibition is the first of its kind to involve multiple institutions and was meticulously prepared by SDL. They worked with art students from Universitas Brawijaya to ensure every detail of the exhibition was perfect, even bringing in art collectors to evaluate the artworks.

“Final Countdown” features 25 artworks from 17 students and can be enjoyed until May 31, 2024. The exhibition is open daily from 12:00 to 20:00 WIB, showcasing various art styles such as realism, expressionism, abstract, and digital. Each piece is the result of the students’ exploration and hard work throughout their studies.
According to the organizers, these artworks have undergone a strict curation process since the beginning of the month, ensuring that only the best are displayed. The curation was done to ensure each piece met the display requirements and could be appreciated until the end of the exhibition.
Students from Universitas Brawijaya said that this exhibition is a concrete step towards the professional world. By showcasing their final projects, the students demonstrate that they have achieved a high artistic level after going through various learning processes.

One of the standout pieces is by Rahayu Riza Awwaliyah, a student from UNESA hailing from Gresik. Rahayu’s work, drawing on ideas and concepts from everyday life, depicts women’s independence in a surrealistic style. It reflects the theme of her thesis, “Women’s Independence as an Inspiration for Painting,” featuring female figures to illustrate their lives, thoughts, and struggles.
Besides artistic beauty, the exhibition also highlights the impact of human activities on the environment. For instance, some artworks reflect how humans often feel entitled to dominate and exploit nature rather than preserve and nurture it.
The exhibition organized by SDL successfully attracted the attention of art collectors on May 24, providing a significant opportunity for young artists to gain wider recognition. This is a crucial moment in their journey towards careers as professional artists.
