(Friday, 20/10/2023) A total of eight young artists from various regions participated in the Vice & Virtue exhibition held on September 16 – October 12, 2023 at Wisma Geha, South Jakarta. Vice & Virtue Gallery is a new art gallery located in Jakarta that has become a highlight for art lovers in Indonesia. One of the artists participating in the exhibition entitled “Ethereal Vision” is Laila Wulancahya who is an alumnus of Brawijaya University (UB) Fine Arts student class of 2018 who has completed her studies in December 2022.

Laila Wulancahya got the opportunity to participate in the Vice & Virtue exhibition after receiving an invitation from Mr. Dadang Rukmana, a Malang artist and chairman of Studio Dinding Luar (SDL) who considered her work to have the qualifications to be auctioned at SidhArta Auction. Wulan accepted the invitation, sending a portfolio to Sidharta. Mr. William, owner of V&V Gallery, was interested in her work and invited her to exhibit at Ethereal Vision by V&V through Mr. Dadang’s intermediary. Wulan showed her enthusiasm for the exhibition as she was able to exhibit alongside seven other talented young artists.

Wulan presented seven paintings of various sizes that have their own characteristics. She mentioned that all of her 7 works in this exhibition are her favorites without exception and some of them have been sold. Many of Wulan’s works are based on personal experiences, people around her such as family and closest friends, and also current phenomena. If it inspires her to create a concept of work, then the motivation to create many works takes the spirit of domestic and foreign artists, such as Roby Dwi Antono, Shaun tan, Little Thunder and Ohtsuki. Current pop culture media such as comics, animation, movies and others also provide many ideas in the work.

The characteristic of Wulan’s current artwork is the result of her journey from the beginning until now, starting from kindergarten. Wulan believes that this development is the result of constant exploration and inspiration from artists who are her role models.

This shows a significant achievement of the involvement of UB Fine Arts students in the realm of the art environment in Indonesia. Wulan states that the participation and innovation of UB art students has grown rapidly since her student days. “I feel that the most important thing for UB Fine Arts students to be more developed is to explore more in other fields outside of fine arts. By exploring other fields more, it will make your fine arts horizon wider later. I know UB Fine Arts students have improved a lot from my time and my seniors, but I still hope you can be even better,” said Wulan.

With her excitement and inspiration, Wulan represents the success and development of fine arts among UB Fine Arts students. The “Vice & Virtue” exhibition is not only a platform for talented artists like Wulan to work, but also a place of inspiration and growth for future generations of artists.
